The Off State of GX 339 – 4
نویسنده
چکیده
We report BeppoSAX and optical observations of the black hole candidate GX339– 4 during its X-ray ‘off’ state in 1999. The broad-band (0.8–50 keV) X-ray emission can be fitted by a single power law with spectral index, α ∼ 1.6. The observed luminosity is 6.6 × 10 erg s in the 0.5–10 keV band, which is at the higher end of the flux distribution of black hole soft X-ray transients in quiescence, comparable to that seen in GS 2023+338 and 4U1630–47. An optical observation just before the BeppoSAX observation shows the source to be very faint at these wavelengths as well (B = 20.1, V = 19.2). By comparing with previously reported ‘off’ and low states (LS), we conclude that the ‘off’ state is actually an extension of the LS, i.e. a LS at lower intensities. We propose that accretion models such as the advection-dominated accretion flows are able to explain the observed properties in such a state.

The evolution of the high-energy cut-off in the X-ray spectrum of GX 339-4 across a hard-to-soft transition
We report on X-ray observations of the black-hole candidate GX 339-4 during its 2006/2007 outburst. The hardness-intensity diagram of all RXTE/PCA data combined shows a q-shaped track similar to that observed in previous outbursts. The evolution through the HID suggests that in the early phase of the outburst the source underwent a sequence of state transitions, from the hard to the soft state,...
متن کاملIs Gx 339 4 a Black Hole Candidate ? Optical Spectroscopy
We carried out spectroscopic and photometric observations of the candidate black-hole binary GX 339?4 during its low-hard and high-soft X-ray states. We have found that the emission lines from GX 339?4 have asymmetric, apparently round-topped prooles in the low-hard state (1997 May), and double-peaked prooles in the high-soft state (1998 April and August). Our data do not show obvious velocity ...

Previous work by Motch et al. (1985) suggested that in the low/hard state of GX 339−4, the soft X-ray power-law extrapolated backward in energy agrees with the IR flux level. Corbel and Fender (2002) later showed that the typical hard state radio power-law extrapolated forward in energy meets the backward extrapolated X-ray power-law at an IR spectral break, which was explicitly observed twice ...

We report on quasi-simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and optical/near-infrared (nIR) observations of the black hole candidate X-ray transient GX 339–4. Our observations were made over a time span of more than eight months in 2002 and cover the initial rise and transition from a hard to a soft spectral state in X-rays. Two distinct patterns of correlated X-ray–optical/nIR behavior were fo...
متن کاملStudying the X-ray hysteresis in GX 339-4: the disc and iron line over one decade
We report on a comprehensive and consistent investigation into the X-ray emission from GX 339-4. All public observations in the 11 year RXTE archive were analysed. Three different types of model single powerlaw, broken powerlaw and a disc + powerlaw were fitted to investigate the evolution of the disc, along with a fixed gaussian component at 6.4 keV to investigate any iron line in the spectrum...

We report the results of observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer of the black-hole candidate GX 339-4 during the state transition of 1998. We find that both the X-ray spectrum and the characteristic of the time variability after the transition are typical of a high/soft state. We cannot exclude that the source went through an Intermediate State before entering the high state. We discu...
